1 - Detailed
three value pattern is drawn on 8.5" X 11" sheet of bond
paper. This is one of several sketches done on tracing paper.

2 - Pattern
transferred to stretched, full sheet watercolor paper. Cool tertiary,
therefore dulled, red hue applied to sheet in various values.

3 - Concentrating on light, medium and dark
values around positive and negative shapes created by the dock's
substructure..

4 - Masking
fluid applied to upper area of dock. Bug sprayer used to apply light
coats of paint. Brush handle used to rough of the smoothness of
sprayed area.

5 - Rubber
cement pickup used to remove frisket. Sky is determined to as too
busy. Mental note to make future change to sky area.

6 - Concentrating
on lower half of painting.Value adjustments and the addition of
some calligraphy is seen in the areas of the pilings

7 - Major
area of attention is in the vicinity of the vegetation, the understructure
and dock-piling. Values and shapes are further developed.

8 - Attention
split between refining the lower two-thirds of the painting and
the upper structural area. Most of the work below the dock is more
subtle in nature.

9 - Upper
dock area is masked out and sky darkened dramatically! Paint was
applied using the same spray technique mentioned earlier in the
demonstration
|

10 - Small
value and/or intensity adjustments in many areas of the painting.
Slight increase in the cool-red intensity and darkening of value
in the area of the posts.
