Art & Fear (Self Help Book) by David Bayles & Ted Orland
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : Self-Help Book . This is my favorite of the self-help books. A real winner ... with observations on the perils (and rewards) of artmaking. The introduction includes the following: "This is a book about art. Ordinary art ... while geniuses may get made once-a-century or so, good art gets made all the time." The first chapter offers comments like, "Making art now means working in the face of uncertainty; it means living with doubt and contradiction, doing something no one much cares whether you do, and for which there may be neither audience nor reward." And, "Artmaking involves skills that can be learned." It just keeps getting better with each and every chapter. The back cover of the book states: "What is your art really about? Where is it going? What stands in the way of getting it there? These are questions that recur at each stage of artistic development - and they are the source for this volume of wonderfully incisive commentary." In my classes and workshops, I notice many people who are to one degree or another, blocked or immobilized by some type of fear. Art & Fear should be required reading for any art program, at any and all levels. While other volumes may be well meaning, they seem, to me, more like pop psychology or yesteryear psychology. Not so with Art & Fear, which goes directly to the root of the problems better than any book of which I am currently aware. This is a fast, unpretentious read too. Cover to cover in one or two sittings (122 pages). My advice is to bring your highlighter pen and prepare for a wonderful eye opener. Off the top of my head and in my opinion (I assume that is why your are reading this), I'd say the authors are about on track 95% of the time! For me, that spells a real winner. A real jewel. A breath of fresh air! A "must have" book! Paperback .

In its latest edition, it has been completely updated, expanded, and reset,. The book addresses new materials, toxicity, and other areas. Backroads of California by Earl Thollander
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : Pictorial Book . Illustrations by the author. Not primarily intended as a"How To" book, Back Roads of California features selected trips and side roads off California's major highways, including trip notes by the author. In addition to my first watercolor instructor, George Post, Earl Thollander's work has been a model for me for years. To my eyes, his sense of design and use of line is about as flawless as it comes. Frankly, I've never seen a poorly designed or executed work of art by Earl Thollander. Although Thollander modestly confesses to thinking of himself as a "reportorial" artist or illustrator, I think of him as a true artist and watercolor painter - in the best sense of the words. This is a book bulging with wonderful vignettes, sketches, drawings, and watercolor paintings in the totally original style of one of the greats. The Epilogue, the last page in the book, is worth the price of the book alone. I give Back Roads of California, my highest recommendation. Hardbound .

Becoming a Successful Artist by Lewis Lehrman
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . This book is a gold mine of information. Being An Artist" shares the career stories of twenty well-known artists who offer their personal stories - each one different, yet the same in many ways. They illustrate that you continually ask yourself, "What's really important to me?...What exactly do I want to say?... What do I need to say through my art?" And then let the answers to those questions lead where they may. These uniquely personal journeys will not only inspire, they'll provide honest, usable information about the practice of making art. These artists share the questions they have asked themselves, the problems they've faced and overcome, and the experiences that have put them in the process of continually becoming the most fulfilled artists they can be. This is a reprint of a previous out-of-print book, "Being an Artist." Ironically, the change in title suggest much about how we view art and artists in America. Index. 111 Color Illustrations. A great reference book. Hardbound .

Breaking The Rules of Watercolor by Burt Silverman
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . The title gives some clue as to the direction of this book. In the Introduction Silverman says, "In essence, my approach to watercolor was born out of the frustration of being unable to paint with the relative ease and abandon of oils. I was trying to find a way of handling watercolor that was free and flexible enough so that I wasn't afraid to make a mistake." Silverman demonstrates "impossible" watercolor techniques for portraits, figures, and landscapes. He notes that Turner, "This greatest of all watercolorists seemed totally unaware of the 'rules' that I'd learned about watercolor. He didn't hesitate to wash out, scrub out, scratch out, and repaint until he got it right." This is a book for those who believe one cannot "control" watercolor, or that watercolor is "unforgiving." Capturing Light in Watercolor by Marilyn Simandle with Lewis Barrett Lehrman
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . This book is "... a series of step-by-step demonstrations - each building on the one before it." The book jacket continues, "From thumbnail sketches to finishing touches, watch as Marilyn paints a broad range of subjects .... Throughout, she shares her special ways of working - including the way she uses a palette knife to create texture and how she achieves the interesting "Simandle Grays" that fill her shadows." I must admit to being a bit uncomfortable with the jacket claim of, and the author's alluding to, "Simandle Grays." Nor is using a palette knife particularly unique to this author. Still, I think most readers will find this book - as I did - interesting and informative. The author lists her Favorite Books. Index. Hardbound .

Color Choices by Stephen Quiller
Level : Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . Illustrations by the author. I believe color can be as simple or as complex as one makes it. Quiller seems to emphasize the more complex, over what he calls the "inner vision," or simpler approach to color. It is a gathering of interesting and informative material and is beautiful to behold. The rear of the book contains interesting information on Master Colorists, including Dutch Painters, English Painters, Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, Late 19th- and Early 20th-Century Painters, The Eight and Its School, The Taos School, and More American Painters. In the Epilogue, Quiller states, "We are here to grow as painters and can do this by reading, learning, sharing our knowledge, and continuing to pursue our painting." Bibliography. Index. Hardbound .

Color for the Watercolor Painter by Tom Hill, A.N.A., A.W.S.
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . Illustrations by the author. The book reviews basic materials, tools, and watercolor techniques. Color theory is discussed in simple terms. Hill describes and evaluates the tube colors he finds the most useful, how each color behaves, and how he recommends using it. The reader is encouraged to experiment in order to become acquainted with the characteristics of the different colors, now to achieve textural effects, and how to mix colors. Color palettes are suggested for various purposes. Hill discusses how to create the effects of distance and atmosphere through colors and how to emphasize the center of interest with color. There is a series of full-color, step-by-step demonstration projects including landscapes, seascapes, floral paintings, portraits, and figure paintings. 160 pages. 8.25" x 11". 92 black and white illustrations, 26 full-color plates. Color-by-Color Guide to Watercolor by Zoltan Szabo
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . The book jacket quotes Szabo: "The information in this book is based on my own experiments and years of painting with a conscious awareness of the fickle behavior of my chosen and beloved medium ..." The book includes descriptions and usage tips for 40 artist's-quality colors - arranged in spectral order within seven major hue sections. Some of the color usage is quite appealing visually! I find it interesting that books on color seem to be "hot items," the "in" thing right now; they are "what's selling," "what's happening." This book is probably as good as any. Maybe the real reason for the emphasis on color (after all, color is only one of the elements of design) is that new printing techniques are more able to do justice to color these days, where as in the past shape and value were being featured. Now book publishers can push books on color (follow the money). Anyway, I particularly appreciate Szabo's informative approach to triadic color and the discussion and illustration of each color mixed with a warm neutral and a cool neutral. The key here is HOW Szabo uses the neutrals; the MANNER in which he uses them. Some artists don't believe in using tube neutrals, feeling it better to mix their neutrals from colors used in the painting. The truth - and I think it important for the student of watercolor to understand - is that each is correct in his/her own way. One is not necesarily "right" and the other "wrong." Nor is one method necessairly better than another. Remember, in art there are few - if any - absolutes. There are no "secrets." There is no one "best" method. I guess this is my way of indicating there's something in this book to visually please and intellectually inform just about everyone. Hardbound .

Creative Watercolor by Mary Ann Beckwith with Lorie M. Liebrock
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : Pictorial Book/How to Book . In her introduction to the book Mary Ann states: "Writing a step-by step guide implies art can be produced by formula or recipe. It suggests artists always produce their work by some predictable process that can be recorded and duplicated. The artists in this book recorded techniques used to create some of their works. They may never use this same succession of steps or even the same process in another painting. In truly creative processes, the first step dictates the succeeding steps. Each piece of art will progress in an individual way; none will duplicate the process of another." I could not agree more. The author and book clearly illustrate that wonderful works can be created not only with experimentation and technology, but also with only the basics ... a coloring agent, applicator and receptive surface. From personal experimentation and experience, I have come to realize that almost any approach one takes to painting may - in time - become somewhat of a "formula." At what point to draw the line between formula and creativity may be a personal decision based on many aspects. In my mind Mary Ann's book illustrates that perhaps it is not a particular formula but the rigidity of approach that threatens the creative juices of the artist. As Salvidor Dali has been credited with saying, "The first man to compare the cheeks of a young woman to a rose was obviously a poet; the first to repeat it was possibly an idiot." There is enough info in "Creative Watercolor" to keep one inspired, interested, and busy for a lifetime! I find the author's approach honest, sincere, and refreshing. A "must have" book! If you like, you may view the creative work of Mary Ann Beckwith on the net (or order her book from her site too) at http://www.fa.mtu.edu/~mabeckwi/. Hardbound .

Croney on Watercolor by Claude Croney
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : Non-Pictorial Book . Illustrations by the author. Croney believes, "Painters should interpret what they see, not copy or be limited by the scene." Croney uses five basic building blocks in art: drawing, composition, values, color and technique. Each step is analyzed in simple, direct terms. This is a sound, useful book for all who would like to know more about the how and why of picture making with watercolor. Illustrations are about split between black and white and limited palette, color. Croney's approach is deceptively simple and straightforward. Croney says, "I'd rather be a poor me than a good imitation of somebody else." Good stuff! Paperback .

Dynamic Composition by Frank Web
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . This is another wonderful book that is now out of print, but still worthy of seeking out. Frank Webb gets to the core of a subject with a painting economy that may appear simple to the untrained eye. While the book is illustrated with the works of 24 guest artists, 8 of whom are or have been his students, the text is a rather complete course in the principles and elements of design. As Webb says in the Preface to the book, "It not only propels the beginner through the composition barrier, but is a reference for the more experienced painter. It should be read, marked, learned and inwardly digested by re-reading." And that is exactly why I include in on this list. Bibliography. Index. Hardbound .

George Post by Gordon T. McClelland
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : Pictorial Book (and How To) . I have a personal interest in this biographical book. It is about my first watercolor instructor, George Post, to whom I am eternally indebted. George Post has long been recognized as one of California's premier watercolor artists. I am indebted to watercolorist Kenneth Potter for letting me know, in early 1998, of this book's existence. Border's Books had told me it was no longer available ("out of print") and after nearly six weeks ... canceled my order! However, I was able to order "GEORGE POST" through Amazon.com on 4/25/98. The book arrived five days later! The power of the Internet! I've read "GEORGE POST" cover to cover in less than a day! What a joy! It is a book I can easily and eagerly recommend! In the Forward to the book Rex Brandt writes, "Working exclusively in watercolor since his 20s, with a minimum of histrionics, his works have a deceptive simplicity. The decorative charm of a Post watercolor is enhanced by the immediateness of his method - which requires that he paint directly from nature ... Post's influence on his fellow painters and a legion of students is second to none on the West Coast, and certainly justifies his position as the pre-eminent watercolorist of his region." Later in the book the author, Gordon T. McClelland writes, "Although most of his watercolors look deceptively simple, they are masterfully composed, spontaneously painted and have a creative use of color and light to establish a definite mood." And George Post is quoted too, 'the first split-second reaction, that first wonderful visual image, is the thing one must try to project on paper." George Post's life and work are documented in this illustrated biography, tracing his progress from the late 1920s to the 1980s. Insights pertaining to his unique style of watercolor painting are included, as well as discussions of the events that helped shape his career and a chronological list of his exhibition records and travels. He taught regularly at the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, California and as a guest instructor at Stanford University, San Jose State College, San Diego Fine Arts Gallery, Rex Brandt School of Watercolor Painting and the T. H. Hewitt Watercolor Workshops. His watercolors are represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, San Diego Museum of Art, Oakland Museum of Art, Laguna Beach Museum of Art, M.H. de Young Museum, Seattle Art Museum, California Palace Of The Legion of Honor, Santa Barbara Museum of Art and Mills College Collection. Personally, I can attest to his devotion to the medium of watercolor as well as to his dedication to the encouragement and support of his students ... throughout his entire life! Simply put, George Post introduced me to ... and single-handedly turned me on to watercolor painting! A "must have" book! ISBN 0914589083 Hardbound .

If You Want To Write: Art, Independence & by Brenda Ueland
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : Self-Help Book . "Everybody is talented, original and has something important to say ..." So begins Brenda Ueland's classic on writing and the creative process, first published in 1938 and now available in paperback. Carl Sandburg called this book "The best book ever written about how to write." But If You Want To Write is more than just a book on writing. Ueland said, "Whenever I say 'writing' in this book, I also mean anything that you love and want to do or to make... You must be sure that your imagination and love are behind it..." The author said she had two rules she followed absolutely: to tell the truth, and not to do anything she didn't want to do. I discovered Brenda Ueland by way of an article written by Guy Kawasaki, the Apple evangelist, for a Macintosh computer magazine. He had recommended the book as a guide to creative computer programming. I now recommend it as a guide to creative watercolor painting! It is one of my favorite books. A "must have" book! Paperback .

Keith Haring by John Gruen
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : Biography . I found this book, a gift, to be an interesting and informative read. Regardless of what one might think of Keith Haring, the person, his approach to art, or his work, this is a book that seems to provide an honest, and frank look at the life of the artist. It is Haring's story told by those who knew him and by the artist himself. He certainly was prolific with regard to artistic output. He created a simple, yet immediately identifiable style recognized the world over. Words descriptive of his work might be: Symbols, Marks, Communication,Simplicity, Childlike, Original, Thoughtful, Daring, etc. Between the covers of this book, there is probably something to offend, please, inform, delight, annoy, and enlighten almost any reader. Not a watercolor book by any means, yet any open-minded watercolorist would almost certainly find something inspiring and informative within the written pages. My copy is loaded with yellow, Post-It-Note messages and comments that I've added (both pro and con). Keith causes one to think. Illustrated. ISBN0-0671781502 Paperback .

Learn Watercolor the Edgar Whitney Way by Ron Ranson
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . llustrations by Ed Whitney and various artists. Fifteen of Whitney's best-known "disciples" teach the enduring painting principles that helped them - and countless others - create paintings. Some of these "disciples" are Henry Fukuhara, Frank Webb, Tony Couch, Barbara Nechis, Tony van Hasselt, Skip Lawrence, and Betty Lou Schlemm. This book is a compilation of Whitney's own artwork and his teachings. While I never had the opportunity of taking a Whitney Workshop, I consider him a Master Teacher. If one judges a teacher by the success of his students, Whitney has to be in there with the best of them. This is a teaching book, a book that tackles the problems that confront both beginning and advanced watercolor painters. A wealth of information about painting, the elements and principles of design, backed up by many wonderful color illustrations. Index. Book List. A "must have" book! Hardbound .

Learning By Heart. by Corita Kent and Jan Steward
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . If you believe, as I do, each of us is born with a natural ability to create, and yet many of us have lost touch with this inborn talent ... this book is for you! Corita Kent was, I believe, one of those rare people we refer to as a Master Teacher. Kent developed a unique, exciting, and widely influential program designed to encourage and enhance the creativity of her students. Here are the principles, tools, and techniques used to help tap natural creative energies and release the artist within. Breaking down the barriers of "professionalism," Corita devised projects and exercises that challenge preconceptions and fears, open students to new directions, and free them to discover their own best work in any medium. The book uses photographs, drawings, paintings, and folk art to support exercises that explore sources, composition, structure, technique, and the entire creative process - from developing ideas to completing projects to integrating our art with our daily lives. Life Doesn't Frighten Me by Maya Angelou
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : Pictorial Book . At first glance, this book is not a "how to" book, nor a painting book. It's a children's book. But, wait! Look again! Maya Angelou's poem .".. celebrates the courage within each of us, young and old." Maya's words of encouragement are accompanied by the paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Basquiat's style, described by some as childlike (by others as childish), seem in perfect harmony with the idea of the author's poem. In spite of his critics, I firmly believe there is much to be learned from Basquiat's deceptively simple, honest work. I can therefore wholeheartedly recommend this book ... to all whose minds are open ... to all who are willing to "look and see" beyond the lens of a camera ... to all who want to "loosen up," ... to all who enjoy a direct, "painterly" approach to painting ... to all who "know they don't know it all." Making Color Sing by Jeanne Dobie, AWS
Level : Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . There is much excellent information, for painters of all levels contained within the pages of Making Colors Sing. With all due respect, I wonder why someone of the obvious caliber and expertise of this author feels a need to create new terminology when - to the best of my knowledge - no need exists. Why, for example write (1) about "mouse" grays and (2) "octanic" mixtures? The traditional and existing terminology, I believe, might be written as (1) warm/cool low chroma, low intensity, dull, tertiary colors (grays) and (2) warm/cool bright, intense, high chroma, high intensity mixtures. It makes one wonder how publishers and editors miss things like this? Maybe someone will enlighten me by email. In the meantime, I think it unfortunate to further confuse art terminology and in the process ... student understanding. As a student of watercolor, little things like this tend to make one question - rightly or wrongly - other areas of an author's/editor's/publisher's expertise, dedication and/or motivation. As a result, focus, interest, credibility and understanding may be lost in the process That said, there is an enormous amount of information contained within the pages of this book, making it a worthy addition to the library of any serious student of watercolor. In short, I admire the work of the artist, but question the methods of the teacher. Lots of inspiring watercolor illustrations! 160 pages. 200 color plates. Index. Hardbound .

Master Class in Watercolor by Edward Betts, N.A., A.W.S.
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . Edward Betts writes, "I am not at all in favor of the separation of figurative, descriptive art and abstract or non-objective art. There is certainly plenty of room for both philosophies within the same artist ... an artist should not be concerned with whether he is a traditionalist or a modernist or something in between; he should paint in whatever manner he finds most natural and true to himself." I believe this book has been updated and republished as Master Class in Watermedia and is currently available by clicking here. As I recall much (if not all) of the material in the out-of-print book is contained in the followup book. And, there are more color plates too. Even though these books refer to "Master Class," they are easily understood, and contain valuable, easy to follow information for watercolor painters of all levels. 200 black and white illustrations. 32 full-color plates. Oil Painting. Develop Your Natural Ability by Charles Sovek
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . What's an oil painting book doing on a watercolor site, you ask? Because it's an excellent book about painting that can - with some relatively minor adjustments - be applied to watercolor as well as oil! Also because it deals with making expressive, beautiful marks on a surface. It's a book about shape, value and color. In the introduction, Charles Sovek says, "A building can be brushed in lopsided and drip with gaudy color and yet be aesthetically pleasing. paradoxically, a perfectly shaped and accurately rendered structure may appear all wrong. The accidental merging of colors is just as valid as preconceived mixtures. Spontaneity replaces predictability and all's well that ends well ... Tonal imagery surrounds us on all sides and is an important part of our non-verbal language. In the last chapter, Sovek writes, "The price paid for artistic autonomy is uncertainty." He goes on, "I believe that doubt and uncertainty are a healthy part of every artist's makeup, for without them the whims, hunches and accompanying misgivings that form the germ of a creative act cold easily wilt into the blandness of formalized craft. In the final analysis, succeeding as a painter means believing in the magic that can happen when your brush touches a canvas." This is a wonderful book that would be a welcome addition to every artist's library. It is heavily illustrated with appropriate black and white, and color plates. A "must have" book! Paperback .

Oil Painting - The Workshop Experience by Ted Goerschner with Lewis Barrett Lehrman
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . This book takes you on an imaginary seven day workshop. As the book jacket explains, "One of the best things about attending a workshop - with a knowledgeable instructor to focus and guide your efforts - is that you're a better artist by the end of the week. Don't expect anything less from this workshop-in-print." Goerschner writes, "Many people know about basic drawing and color but lack the courage and conviction to build their own painting, instead of just trying to copy what they see. It's rare to find a perfect, ready-made scene out there." On the jacket cover Goerschner is quoted as saying, "While I'm not there beside you to guide your every brushstroke, I am providing the next best thing: all my working secrets, laid out in a planned sequence of demonstrations and paint-on critiques." Personally, I shudder at any mention of "secrets" in relation to art of any kind. The only "secret" or "magic" I know of relative to painting is much dedication, day to day practice, study, stacks of paper, and hard work. Still. any painter - in any medium - can learn from and be inspired by this book. I like the basic approach and can easily recommend it. Having a canine painting companion myself, I can understand how the author misses "Buck," and admit to being touched by the book's "Dedication." Ted Goerschner is another artist who reminds us that the journey is more important than the destination, in more ways than one. I wish for him ... another "Buck" in his life. Many illustrations to support the text. In addition to the "Seven-day Workshop," there is a Resources page, A Final Word, and Index. Hardbound .

Oriental Watercolor Techniques by Frederick Wong
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . Fred Wong paints contemporary subjects in a contemporary style, yet his tools and techniques come from the Far East. He discusses how one might wish to try using the brushes, papers, washes, strokes, and special effects perfected by the Far Eastern masters. The text is richly illustrated with precise diagrams of Oriental painting tools and equipment; instructive closeups of paintings of trees and growing things; sky, water, and weather; and structures such as buildings and bridges. Of particular note and interest is the final chapter in which Wong explains the time-tested Oriental methods of mounting and framing. This chapter alone, is worth both the price of the book and the efforts it may take to find this now out of print jewel. For every watercolorist who seeks new methods and new inspiration, this book has a wealth of technical information and creative ideas. Bibliography. Index. Hardbound .

Paint Watercolors Filled With Life & Energy by Arne Westerman
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . Illustrations by the author. This book is appealing to look at, a pleasure to read, and very, very painterly! Westerman seems to hold nothing back and makes it quite obvious he very much enjoys what he does. In the Introduction to the book, Westerman says, "Clever technique alone has little lasting value. Superficial dash and sparkle fade petty rapidly in interest." He did not begin painting watercolors until 50 years of age. Westerman credits his first watercolor instructor with teaching him to "accept failure as part of the game." Westerman believes "We have to try constantly to expand our limits, and that exposes us to success as well as failure." He discusses how to use light and color to powerfully express feeling in watercolor. Westerman reviews the basics - materials, composition, camera and sketch work, brushwork, gesture, color and more. Black-and-white compositional thumbnails are discussed, moving on to small color sketches, and then to the actual painting. Several start-to-finish demonstrations put it all into action and show different ways that mood is created. The book tells how to solve problems before putting paint to paper. Ten ways to get unstuck, six things to remember, sixteen rules to forget, how to be your own best critic, and more. Westerman's painting method helps one loosen up, take risks with strokes, and avoid timidity. Refreshingly, and most importantly ... Westerman, a fine draftsman himself, lists material that - contrary to popular opinion - supports the fact you do not necessairly have to be an expert at drawing to paint well or succeed. Suggested Reading. Index. A "must have" book! NOTE: Follow this link to Arne Westerman's latest workshops. Hardbound .

Powers shows how the design elements and principles play a vital role in determining a portrait's ultimate success. This is a complete book; one with which you wouldn't mind being marooned on a deserted island. A personal note. I had an occasion to call Alex Powers regarding a resource I was seeking. I found him extremely helpful, and sharing of his knowledge as well as his personal time. Painting Watercolors On Location by Tom Hill
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . Many artists claim there is no substitute for painting on location. This book takes the reader on location with Tom Hill. Eleven demonstrations show how Hill thinks, how he chooses techniques, and decides what to put in and take out of the scene in front of him. The book discusses on-location equipment, how to select and mix colors to avoid muddy or weak results, how to "populate" a scene with incidental figures, working with saturated colors to get good values, how to simplify and rework the scene for impact and - most importantly - how to know when to quit! This is all accomplished with the use of eleven step-by-step demonstrations of subject matter from Gloucester harbor to the Grand Tetons, from a desert oasis to the Greek island of Sanorini. Other locations are a Midwest Farmhouse; the Village of Mousehole; an Old Western Corral; a Bridge at Ronda; the Early Morning Light of Hania; and Ocotlan on Market Day. Index. Hardbound .

Painting With The White of Your Paper by Judi Wagner & Tony Van Hasselt
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . This book is divided into two parts. Part One, "White Paper Energy" deals with the many ways the white of the paper can be used to invigorate watercolor paintings. Part Two, "White Paper Techniques" encourages experimentation with the many surfaces, mediums and techniques available for using the white of the paper effectively. Numerous paintings by several artists besides the authors, help explain and illustrate - in a variety of styles and techniques - the power of unpainted paper. The book features several step-by-step, how-to demonstrations that clearly support important portions of the text. Among the chapters in the book are, "Three Ways To Save Whites," "Six Ways to Let Whites Show Through," and "Five Ways to Get the White Back." This is another book that demonstrates the power of keeping things relatively simple. Index. Hardbound .

Pleasure of Painting by Franklin Jones
Level : Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Description : How-To Book . Illustrations by the author. Pleasure of Painting covers three mediums, watercolor, oil, and acrylic. The contents compare the mediums, including materials, procedures, and techniques in each. It is interesting to view a 3-in-1 approach. There is also a step-by-step demonstration in each of the mediums; a portfolio of paintings of the same subject in each of the mediums; a Potpourri section; discussion of painting figures and a final section on using the camera, and framing. The reader might find some of the work a bit reminiscent of Andrew Wyeth and the New England atmosphere, including a wonderful emphasis on simplicity, shape, and value. Jones believes, "It's not what you paint, but how you paint it that counts." His approach to outdoor painting is no nonsense and spartan. Originally printed in 1975, the book has more black and white plates than color. Considering the material, this does not seem to detract from - and may very well enhance - the instructional value. No index.Hardbound .
