DETAIL VIEW: PEACE MISSION PIECES
| More
fun with watercolor! The idea for this newest painting came from a Free
Friday session in which I was showing a participant how a small sketch
can help simplify subject, design, shape, value, etc. I made a quick
sketch of her subject matter (a New Mexico mission) to illustrate how
I might approach the subject. The sketch turned out well enough that I decided to use it as a basis for that days demo session. I asked two people closest to me for their favorite color (blue and purple) and used those colors as my general color scheme. Initially, the painting was a combination of about six major pieces, or shapes. There were two different sized shapes of light value (sky and foreground), one large medium value shape (mission), and three dark shapes of various sizes (background). As I drew the shapes on my watercolor paper, someone noticed that the light shape at the bottom of the rectangle took on an unplanned, but recognizable form. I decided to make the best of it. The test question of the day is ... do you see what we see? |
