REGISTRATION for "Free Fridays" MINI-WORKSHOPS: No registration. No cost. No tuition. No charge. No catch. Just show up at the right time and location for inspiration, guidance, help, sharing of information, conversation, painting camaraderie, and the freshness of the outdoors. Bring your sketch book, bring your painting equipment, bring a friend or friends, and/or lots of questions.

WHO'S WELCOME: Anyone open to learning, sharing, and exercising the joys and pitfalls of outdoor watercolor painting. "Free Fridays" Mini-Workshops offer an excellent opportunity for anyone trying watercolor for the first time.

ALL LEVELS of experience are encouraged, including Beginners, Intermediates, and Advanced!

Out-of-region, out-of-state visitors are welcome too!

All ages (those under 18 should be accompanied by an adult).

The mobility of those in attendance will receive consideration. However, given this is an outdoor experience participants should be of good health and able to walk a few blocks over uneven terrain.

“There is no artist, however successful, who cannot learn something new and valuable from the example and association with the work of other artists.” - Norman Kent

FREE FRIDAY GOALS: To encourage year-round watercolor painting "in open air"(en plein air).

To provide an on-going opportunity for motivation, encouragement and easy access to the outdoor workshop environment.

To provide a forum in which painters of all ages, abilities, and experience can come together to ask questions, share painting and workshop information, as well as inspire and motivate one another.

To further a tradition begun by watercolor artist George Post. During his years as instructor at California College of Arts and Crafts (1947-1972), Mr. Post offered no cost workshops known as "Free Fridays." It is a tradition I believe worth continuing. Note: CCAC is now known as CCA, California College of the Arts.

ABOUT FREE FRIDAYS: Free Friday began in August of 2002 and, with few exceptions, has been offered every Friday throughout all 12 months of every year. We find a way to paint outdoors even when it rains!

Free Fridays allow participants to observe, sketch, photograph, or paint (or any combination of the aforementioned activities). Free Fridays also are a great way to learn about or discuss various types of materials, etc. I'll begin a watercolor demonstration at each session. Before, during and after the demo I'll be available to answer questions, and - time allowing - provide help and guidance.

Examples of previous Group Workshop demonstrations can be seen by following these links: Demo One, Demo Two, Demo Three, Demo Four.

The instructional aspect of the Mini-Workshops will be varied and flexible, based each time on the interest and needs of those in attendance.

"Free Fridays" Mini-Workshops are designed to be of short duration (3 hours). They are meant to increase the ease, frequency and availability of learning and participating in outdoor watercolor painting. Mini-Workshops are not intended nor should they be thought of as an effective replacement for Group Workshops.

"Free Fridays" Mini-Workshops are an ideal introduction or follow-up to Group Workshops.

EQUIPMENT: First-timers/beginner), and the budget conscious are encouraged, but not required, to attend one Mini-Workshop prior to purchasing materials. Be prepared to ask questions regarding what to buy and what to avoid. You'll come away well informed, more confident, and better able to make cost-effective material purchases appropriate to outdoor painting. If you already have materials, bring what you have.

Anyone needing help with materials may email me (avoid my spam filter by clicking on the e-mail link seen below) ...

Or, better yet bring your questions to one of the Mini-Workshops so everyone will benefit.

HELP PROMOTE FREE FRIDAY: To reach the widest audience, to provide the greatest opportunity, I encourage the promotion of the"Free Fridays" Mini-Workshops. Let's make "Free Fridays" a success! You can do your part by "spreading the word" using email, chat groups, mailing lists, web site links, word of mouth, or whatever means works best for you. Workshop information may be posted in appropriate places (art suppliers, associations, clubs, societies, mailing lists, etc.) and / or by passing along workshop information to friends, neighbors, and associates. Feel free to print and post this one-page, printer friendly flyer!

CANCELLATIONS and FREE FRIDAY UPDATES: Check this web site frequently for scheduling updates. To receive "instant" email notification of updates and last minute "Free Fridays" cancellations send me an e-mail (to avoid my spam filter click on the e-mail link seen below) ...

E-mail is a GREAT way of communicating quickly, easily and inexpensively. As artists we can benefit by email's immediacy and cost effectiveness!

In the event a workshop must be cancelled, it will be noted immediately in the above "Free Fridays Watercolor Workshop Schedule" area. The date will be lined out, with a short explanation posted to the right of the date.

EXAMPLE: 07/26/02. (Vacation).

"Free Fridays" Mini-Workshops will NOT be canceled due to weather conditions such as fog, heat, cold, or even snow! Weather cancellations will occur only due to heavy rain, high wind, or due to a personal scheduling conflict. Gaining experience with less than ideal weather conditions is an important part of outdoor painting.

NOTE 1 (of 3): The Sara Park parking lot is no longer open to vehicles. We park on the street and meet near the gate. It is a short walk into the prking lot area which is open to pedestrian traffic.

LOCATION & DIRECTIONS: Sara Park Acess, Sacramento, California. Take Watt Avenue to the American River Overpass, then take the La Riviera Drive Off-Ramp, and turn right (east) onto La Riviera Drive. Continue past the shopping area (on the right) and to the signal light at Salmon Falls Drive and La Riviera Drive (Jack-in-the-Box on the southeast corner). Continue on La Riviera Drive, past the first boulevard stop at Waterton Way, then continue east to the second boulevard stop. This will be the intersection of La Riviera Drive with Tuolumne Drive to the right (south) and Rogue River Drive to the left (north). Turn left (north) onto Rogue River Drive and go several blocks through a residential area to the Sara Park entrance. The Sara Park acess / entrance sign and small, off street parking lot will be on your left.

NOTE 2 (of 3): ROGUE RIVER DRIVE DEAD ENDS INTO WHAT LOOKS LIKE A PARK. THIS IS NOT SARA PARK.THE SARA PARK PARKING LOT ENTRANCE IS ABOUT A BLOCK AWAY (WEST) BEFORE WHERE ROGUE RIVER DEAD ENDS INTO WHAT LOOKS LIKE A PARK!!!!!

WE MEET IN THE SARA PARK PARKING LOT AND THEN TRAVEL A SHORT DISTANCE TO OUR PAINTING SITE.

NOTE 3 (of 3): You must look CAREFULLY for the Sara Park access entrance sign or you will miss it! The park entrance is opposite a fire plug on the other side of the street. The nearest residential address is 2350 Rogue River Drive, which is adjacent to the Sara Park acess/entrance. There is no toll booth.

If you arrive late and we have left the parking lot, just walk up the ramp at the north end of the parking lot and then walk east on the levee. Look to the north as you walk and you will probably see one or more of us painting on the south of the river. Good luck!

The nearest rest room availability is at Jack-in-the-Box Restaurant (La Riviera Drive and Salmon Falls Drive) or Watt Avenue Parkway entrance (La Riviera Drive and Watt Ave - possible toll).

The follies which a man regrets most in his life are those which he didn't commit when he had the opportunity. Helen Rowland, Journalist

Like it or not, other than genetic genius, there is no quick road to painting success; we learn by doing. While the final process of creating a painting may be "simple" to some, it seems the only "secret," the only "trick" to simplicity and excellence is almost constant, UN-RELENTLESS painting and study, day, after day, after day, after day; some call this determination, others conviction, others passion, while still others call it folly. Idealistic promises, institutional propaganda, slick promotional fluff, hand holding, and patronization are merely additional obstacles on one's path to creative success.
