The images in this gallery area include the work of beginning, intermediate, advanced, as well as an occasional professional painter, all of whom willingly and anonymously share with us works which reflect their commitment, as well as their respect for, and love of watercolor.
The images are presented randomly and in no particular order or date of creation. The works on view reflect various stages of personal development. Some paintings are finished statements. while others are unfinished.
I believe it is Frank Webb who suggests that paintings ought to be appreciated, not judged. Good thought. These watercolors are not offered as award winning paintings (though some might be), nor are they chosen for their overall visual or technical expertise. More often the works are selected based on the painter’s personal creativity, originality, growth, willingness to take risks, uniqueness, and educational value.
Some of the works are the result of class or workshop assignments, others reflect the painters personal interests. Individually, each painting has something to say about the creative spirit, collectively they offer much in the way of appreciation, education, and inspiration.
INFLUENCE vs DERIVATION
I respectfully caution the casual, unknowing, viewer to avoid assuming these works are highly derivative. I agree with the late Henry Fukuhara who stated, “Don’t paint like me, paint like YOU!” Well said.
There is, however much difference between being derivative and being influenced. I discourage the former, but accept the latter, for I too have been artistically influenced by an extremely long list of many magnificent artists who came before me.
As noted, the paintings in this gallery represent persons of various degrees of development and expertise, from absolute beginner, thru intermediate, or even advanced professionals. Their paintings are shared here to encourage others to take a class, or workshop to learn or improve the joys of watercolor painting.
Finally, please remember there is something to be learned from each of these wonderful paintings. These works certainly educate and inspire me. If you are open minded, studious, and of good humor, they will do the same for you. My hope is you will give them the time and respect they deserve. As the saying goes, “It will be time well spent.”
