BORDERS
BOOKS, MUSIC AND CAFE - In addition to a wide selection
of books and music of Hawaii, we found the Cafe to be a wonderful place
to get a quick bite to eat. The ambiance is very satisfying. Books?
You can find "Holy Man," a book about Father Damien of Molokai written
by Gavan Daws. Music? Try "Makalupua 'Oe" by Frank Kawai Hewett (cassette
only), or "Hui Ohana" by Hui Ohana, or "ka pilina" by Teresa Bright
and Kawaikapu Hewett, or if you're ready for it ... "Hawaiian Nation
- A Call for Hawaiian Sovereignty," by The Music ("Dear Mr. President"
may open your eyes and blur your vision for some time)!

BUBA BURGERS - In the days immediately following Hurricane
Iniki (9/11/92) feeding the thousands of survivors, residents and tourists,
became a major problem. Without electricity there is no refrigeration.
Without refrigeration food quickly spoiled. To avoid waste, Bubba Burgers
held an outdoor barbeque, offering free food and drinks to anyone and
everyone. This was typical of the kind of Aloha Spirit we experienced
wherever we went. As a result, we never miss making Bubba Burgers a special
stop every time we return to Kauai. Bubba's calls itself "A world famous
old fashioned hamburger joint and proclaims, "We relish your buns" and
" We cheat tourists, drunks, & attorneys." They are open 10:30 A.M. to
6:00 P.M. Try the unique "Bubba Burger" without lettuce and tomato because
"Lettuce and tomato are grossly overpriced (75¢) at this joint for
a reason!" The reason is a BB tastes better without lettuce and tomato
(really). What more could you ask of a place that boasts, "Prices subject
to change based on Customers attitude!" and "Bubba refuses to serve any
burger costing less than a can of dog food." |

HALE MAKANA OF HANS & KAREN HELLRIEGEL - Early one morning,
my wife and I met Hans and Karen on the beach. By way of our morning chats
(spread over a couple of weeks) we learned they operate a vacation cottage
called Hale Makana (House on the Hill). Hans is a photographer who also
has a photography business on Kauai (and in Seattle, Washington) called
"Aloha Kauai Fantasy Weddings," including all "Photography and Wedding
Arrangements." We've seen examples of Han's photography and been to the
Hale Makana Guest House and can recommend each. Among other items, Hans
and Karen offer a Complete Fantasy Wedding package that includes air fare
from the West Coast, wedding photography, a carriage ride for two, Minister,
Wedding Video, helicopter flights and 7 nights at the Hale Makana Guest
House and more! No web site yet but you can get more info from Hans and
Karen at P.O. Box 3671, Lihue, HI 96766. Telephone- Kauai - 808 245-6500;
Seattle - 206 242-4866. I tried to convert Hans to email but he prefers
to use the Fax machine at- 808 823-8488! Be sure to ask about the "Secret
Chick-a-Pig" beach area (it's not listed on any of the usual tourist maps)!

MARK DANIELS-ARTIST - MARK DANIELLS is an artist living
on the North Shore of Kauai, in the beautiful town of Hanalei. His web
site features a collection of tropical watercolors and limited edition
prints. My wife and I first discovered Mark's watercolors and met his
wife, the year of hurricane Iniki. Mark has a wonderful home right off
the main road of Hanalei directly across the street from the Hanalei School
and an adjacent studio gallery (which he built himself). You can't miss
it! Visitors are welcome to drop in, talk with him and see him working
on his latest creations. His wife runs a child care business next to the
studio so someone is almost always there |

PARADISE MUSIC - Billed as "World's Largest Hawaiian
Music Store." After two years of trying to find a couple of Hawaiian music
CD's and striking out at every place I tried (Hawaii, the mainland and
Internet), Paradise Music located one of my choices immediately and helped
direct me to one of their competitors for the other. Thanks Paradise Music! |
