Above is a detail image of one of four demonstration paintings accomplished during my Fourteenth Annual Mt. Shasta Watercolor Workshop in July of 2010.

The subject of this painting is a depiction of the remains of an old, pedestrian style suspension bridge that I’m told was once used to get from the north side of the Sacramento River to the south side. About all that remains of the bridge is an interesting block of concrete with large threaded bolts anchored in cement. The bolts, unforgiving, and thrusting skyward, add vertical interest to the remains of a weathered chunk of bridge footing in the Cantara Loop area of Mt. Shasta, California.. I thought the grouping of elements fascinating and worthy of interest.

I’ve painted this subject a couple of times before. Anyone interested in seeing the other versions can do so via this blog and my web site. Yesteryear Bridge, may be seem by following this link. And, Bridge Abutments, can be seen here.

This is another piece done as a result of the Henry Fukuhara Manzanar Watercolor Workshop. The location is the Alabama Hills, Lone Pine, CA.

I use my usual approach, a 3-value pencil sketch precedes the actual painting. The sketch is then used as a guide to develop the final watercolor. In this instance, the black line is drawn first, free hand, no preliminary pencil pattern, on the paper. With the ink line there is little room for mistakes. An eraser won’t work here. The watercolor is then put on in layers, with each layer allowed to become bone dry before adding the next layer.

One has to experience the Alabama Hills first hand as photographs, drawings, and paintings, only suggest the grandeur of the actual location. These “hills” are the movie home of my childhood heros, the Lone Ranger (Clayton Moore), Tonto (Jay Silverheels), and Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd). Here’s a link to some interesting information about the Alabama Hills.

A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty “Hi Yo Yellow” … err, … “Hi Yo SIL-ver, away, and the Lone Ranger rides again!”

In Memory … Henry Fukuhara

Image of Henry Fukuhara

4/25/13 – 1/31/10
American artist, teacher, and irreplaceable friend.

To know Henry is to love him … and be influenced by him. Henry was an irreplaceable friend, a role model to many people. He was an artistic original, a special, caring, sharing, nurturing, forgiving human being; an artist’s artist, a teacher’s teacher, a mentor’s mentor, and an American’s American. Artists of the world will miss Henry, but will not forget him, … nor will they forget his unique watercolor paintings.

NOTE: The following information has been provided by Henry’s close friend, Al Setton:

A memorial service was held Sunday, Feb 7, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Santa Monica, CA.

Prior to Henry’s passing, he requested that any donations be made to either of the following sites. Both were important to him and are art related.

Japanese American National Art Museum

Bogus Box II, is the second of two paintings based on the same location and preliminary value plan, or sketch. Previously, I’ve commented on the location, or actual scene, as well as the reason for the title and the basis of my approach (see previous post – Bogus Box i).

This piece was completed outdoors, on location during the recent Mt. Shasta Workshop. It was Saturday’s second demo. The painting developed with little difficulty, and quickly. The clean color, use of white space, and assured line quality is appealing. It reminds me of the old saying, “Less is more.”

Join Us At The State Fair!

State Fair LogoState Fair Logo

By popular demand (sound the trumpets!) fellow watercolorist David Peterson and I will participate in two major events at this year’s California State Fair! File under the heading: If you don’t toot your own horn, who will?

The first event is the 2008 Plein Air at the Fair paint-out August 22, 23, and 24 (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), during normal fair hours. This is not a competitive event, but a “just for fun” paint-out. We will join other artists who will be painting at various fairground locations all three days capturing the “magic of the California State Fair,” as part of Arts Day 2008 (Saturday, August 23rd). All participating artists will have the opportunity to display and/or offer works for sale each day at a special area in the California Fine Art Exhibit hall (Building 7, Expo Center). So if you’re going to the fair and would like to know our general painting location(s) for the day, feel free to contact either or both of us by e-mail and maybe we can link up with you somewhere on the fairgrounds.

For the second event, David and I will do numerous indoor watercolor demonstrations on Wednesday, August 27th, and Thursday, August 28th. We’ll do our best to entertain and inform at our special booth from 12 noon to 10 PM each day. Look for us in Building 7, Expo Center. We’ll be happy to answer your watercolor questions, tell you about private and group workshops, regional art groups, paint-outs, and/or discuss/debate all things watercolor. Join us with an open, inquisitive mind and your time will be well spent. Who knows, what you see and hear might just surprise you (we have a few surprises up our sleeves)! And, each of us will have lots of original watercolor works on site for your viewing pleasure and purchase (think special fair prices). It will be a great fun and informative special event for people of all ages! So, please be sure to drop by and say, “Hello!”

View official State Fair scheduling information for August 27 and 28. Scroll down two thirds of the page and you’ll find us listed under “Arts and Culture.”

Breaking News!

Next Woody Hansen Watercolor Workshop:
Mt. Shasta, CA., July 26 & 27, 2008. Click here for details.
Note: Mt. Shasta workshop canceled. Sacramento workshop substituted. See below …
Mt. Shasta
On Top of Old Smokey (Mt. Shasta)
(Click image to view 3-second movie)

The Mt. Shasta Workshop scheduled for this weekend, July 26th & 27th, cancelled due to a fire to the north of Mt. Shasta and another fire to the south. Air quality in the area at the mercy of wind currents. Currently unhealthy, smoke filled air is forecast thru Saturday. The final decision was delayed until the last minute, but as of 8:30 this morning I had to cancel a most wonderful workshop. That’s the bad news.

However, someone once said when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. So, here is the GOOD NEWS: In place of the Mt. Shasta workshop I have filled the void with a newly scheduled SACRAMENTO WORKSHOP this coming Saturday and Sunday, July 26th and 27th. Not much time to sign up, but if you’re going to be in the area and have the weekend free I invite you to join me at the river this Saturday and Sunday.

The cost for the weekend workshop is $150 per person. Or, save $50 by signing up with a friend ($100 each). Of course, the tuition for former participants of ANY of my workshops is $100 each.

If you’re interested, please e-mail me or call (916 383-3427) as soon as possible. This is a perfect time of year for a Sacramento workshop.

Mountain Cabin DETAIL - Woody Hansen Watercolor
Mountain Cabin – DETAIL – Watercolor by Woody Hansen
(Click image to view entire painting)

An image of a mountain cabin I imagine, but don’t own. Or, maybe an image of a mountain cabin—or home—owned by the many who have lost a dream to our current, unprecedented, ugly fires whose smoke is choking the entire state with unhealthy air.

Kudos to the many firefighters who are working 24/7 to contain what can only be described as an unfortunate mess! One might wonder what help California will provide when these folks suffer future health problems.

On a more positive note I want to thank Rich Osborn, one of the few Free Friday participants who make up a very small, but select band of poor souls who gut it out in the hope of finding answers to this thing we call watercolor. It was Rich who provided the original sketch for what eventually became the basis for Mountain Cabin.

This is the smaller version of three paintings based on the same subject. This piece, of course features green as the Mother Color (read dominate color); one of the two larger paintings has brown as the dominate color, while blue is the emphasized color of the third painting.

Absolutely absurd colors featured in the above painting: Yummy Tummy Yellow, Blasphemous Boogie Blue, and Roaring Roach Red (available soon at a Daniel Smith outlet near you).

River Royalty – DETAIL – Watercolor by Woody Hansen
(Click image to view entire painting)

Here’s a “two-fer!” Two images this time, one a detail (above) from the watercolor, “River Royalty,” and the other (below) of my three-value preliminary sketch.

I deviated from my usual 1.25″x 2.5″Post-It Note sketch, and instead used a 4″x 6″postcard. The black linework was accomplished with a Sharpie pen; the mid values were put in with a Papermate Sharpwriter pencil.

As you can see from the date, I did the sketch in the fall of last year. The painting came about some time later, during one of my Free Friday mini-workshops as I recall. On the right margin of the sketch (edited out) I wrote a reminder, “Fall colors, leaves, etc.” So much for notations. If a painter can move mountains, I guess he can change colors (even without the help of Daniel Smith).
