Yesteryear Bridge – DETAIL – Watercolor by Woody Hansen

Yesteryear Bridge, came about as a result of a sketch I did during one of my Mt. Shasta Watercolor Workshops, held annually in July. The subject matter that provided the basis for this painting, is hidden in among the trees, just off the trail leading into Box Canyon, at Mt. Shasta’s, Cantara Loop area.
The actual painting was started some time later in Sacramento, along the banks of the American River Parkway, and finished in the studio environment. The broken bridge abutment, and a few rusty bolts are all that remain of a bridge that once spanned the headwaters of the Sacramento River.
I am most attracted to this work by the loose, soft, painterly approach to the color, and the simplified translation of, in reality, a rather complex scene. I also am pleased with the looseness and assured approach of the calligraphy.
Sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t. Art is like that (grin).
