4/25/13 – 1/31/10
American artist, teacher, and irreplaceable friend.
To know Henry is to love him … and be influenced by him. Henry was an irreplaceable friend, a role model to many people. He was an artistic original, a special, caring, sharing, nurturing, forgiving human being; an artist’s artist, a teacher’s teacher, a mentor’s mentor, and an American’s American. Artists of the world will miss Henry, but will not forget him, … nor will they forget his unique watercolor paintings.

NOTE: The following information has been provided by Henry’s close friend, Al Setton:
A memorial service was held Sunday, Feb 7, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Santa Monica, CA.
Prior to Henry’s passing, he requested that any donations be made to either of the following sites. Both were important to him and are art related.
Japanese American National Art Museum

Dear Woody,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Henry. I know that he was a good friend to you as well as being one of the great watercolor painters of our generation.
Even though I never met Henry, I can see from the film footage that you shot how wonderful he was both in his demeanor and in his style of painting.
He will be missed. Please accept my condolences on not only your loss, and the loss to Henry’s family, but to us all.

Russell,
Thanks for your condolences.
It’s unfortunate you and Henry never met. I believe he would have appreciated your dedication to sharing information as well as your admirable painting skills.
At times like these I recall someone saying that death is a reminder to the living to, as soon as possible get on with living … and in our case, get on with painting. I think Henry might support that idea wholeheartedly.

Woody,
I agree, and thank you for letting all of us know about Henry’s passing. I have posted our collective loss on my website as well.
Your comment about getting on with the business at hand, namely painting, reminds me of the line from the Shawshank Redemption, that we should “…get busy living, or get busy dying.”
With that in mind, I think it would be a nice tribute to Henry if we would all remember him with a painting. Since I have a workshop next week, I think I will plan on dedicating it to Henry’s memory and to the service he performed for all of us by simply being an exceptional painter and expressing his own unique point of view.
Maybe you could encourage David and the other painters from the Sac area that knew Henry to join in. We could post the paintings on all of our respective websites in memory of him.
I think that would be a nice way to say good bye to a fellow painter.

Russell,
Thank you for the comment. Your suggestion certainly has much merit, and maybe someone else would like to follow through. Personally, I would not be comfortable taking on that responsibility. Frankly, my readership is not large enough to do Henry justice. Additionally, I feel that much beyond what I’ve already posted might – for me – border on becoming self-serving.
It does occur to me that Henry might feel his memory would be best served if each of us, in our own way, do what we can to make sure Henry’s annual Manzanar Workshops continue to grow in scope and popularity. Henry has a very capable, strong core of friends who are, even now, looking out for the future of Henry’s workshops.
However, having stated the above, I gladly offer this space to you or anyone else who would like to post a painting in tribute to Henry. You might be interested to know I completed a piece yesterday in Henry’s memory. It is titled, “Gambatte.” I intend to post it here in the near future.
Woody
ADDENDUM:
Russell,
Thanks for sending your painting honoring Henry and allowing me to post it here. I think anyone who knew Henry would agree that yours is a painting he would most certainly appreciate. Thanks for sharing.
Woody
Russell says of his painting: “It is my dedication to Henry’s memory, using watercolor, collage, and black ink. I feel honored to be able to do something for a man who, though we never met, inspired me to try new things.
“The painting’s title is “Finding Reflections”, which I thought fit both the actual image (a reflecting pool), and the idea that we should reflect on our own mortality a bit.”
WOODY’S NOTE: Russell tells me his painting has sold and he is donating the money to both of Henry’s charities.

I was program chair of the Valley Watercolor Society when one of our demonstrators failed to show up. So…with Henry smiling at me in the front row, we proceeded to have an open forum, discussion, and general camaraderie. A few days later, I received a hand-painted note from Henry telling me I “tap-danced” my way through an uncomfortable situation. I still have that note and will treasure it. He was a wonderful man and an inspiring artist. (I was fortunate enough to win via raffle a wonderful demo painting by Henry that graces my home). Patsy Heller
